mundo, a art nouveau influenciou a arte decorativa e especialmente as artes gráficas,
Muitos desses profissionais buscaram inspiração no

Abstract: The purpose of this essay is to perform a historical survey of Brazilian book
covers inspired in the art nouveau, European art movement with great influence on the
applied arts at the start of the 20
th
century. In several parts of the world, the art nouveau
influenced the decorative arts and, most of all, the graphic arts, and contributed to break
away with the 18
th
century models, creating the embryo for the modern graphic design.
In Brazil, this current coincides with the moment in which the political, social and
economic transformations encourage the appearance of the publishing industry. All the
press goes through a period of intense dynamism, in particular the magazines, and this
reflects in modern and sophisticated graphic standards. As regards the publication of
books, brochures illustrated by artists coming from the press, caricature and plastic arts
start to become popular. Many of these professionals were inspired by the linearism and
the art nouveau motives. This work proposes a view of these covers published from
1910 to 1930, and raise questions about aspects still not very much studied concerning
the book cover art pioneers in Brazil and the influence of art nouveau during this period.
